Locating Ourselves as Supervisors: Actively Facing Us

coalition.PNG

In the face of multiple crises and the unknowns of the future, it is important  to understand how we see ourselves both professionally and personally.  While we are tasked with healing our communities, we are also tasked with  carrying the weight of our own experiences, both past and present, through  this time which inevitably feeds into our work.

If you are a supervisor who participated in the previous offering of  "Intersections of Grief & Resilience with Diversity, Equity & Inclusion", we  invite you to join us in this highly interactive workshop intended to offer us  opportunities to face ourselves and consider how resiliency, acknowledging  grief & loss, and diversity, equity and inclusion are paths towards  authenticity and strength for our leadership and practice.

Note: Due to the interactive format of this offering (utilizing breakout room  activities), this session will be limited to a registration of 30 supervisors.  This session directly builds upon the previous offering, "Intersections of Grief  & Resilience with Diversity, Equity & Inclusion." Supervisors who participated  in the previous offering will get priority registration

More about Laura Quiros

Laura Quiros, PhD, LMSW, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Adelphi  University for the past eleven years. She teaches social work practice at the  Doctoral and Master’s level. Her research and scholarly interests focus on the  social construction of racial and ethnic identity and trauma informed care from  a social justice lens. The common thread in her consulting, teaching and  scholarship is elevating complexity and furthering the mission of social justice,  including diversity and inclusion.

Laura works to find spaces in and outside of the classroom to advance inclusion  within organizations, which to me means taking a look at the ways that  “whiteness” is maintained in organizational cultures and supporting  organizations to become more racially literate. She coaches, trains and  facilitates dialogues with executive level staff across higher education,  corporate and non-profits to dig deep and sincerely connect to diversity and  inclusion. Some of this work involves gently pushing the boundaries of

overcoming the resistance to talking candidly about whiteness and unpacking  diversity and inclusion work. Much of this has been accomplished through  relationship building. I use my relationship building and clinical skills as a way  to foster connection, inclusion and empathic accountability. The intersection  for her is clear, as a woman of color from a very multicultural background, she  could only survive through relationship building. Negotiating her identity  required her to create safe enough and brave spaces in order to survive and  thrive. Her practice is one of liberation, love and generosity.

“I think together we can deepen the conversation to develop a reflective  consciousness that is strength-based, yet also critically nurturing and

ultimately, contribute to changing the world. I welcome the opportunity to  work with you.”
